{"id":2,"date":"2018-03-09T19:53:22","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T19:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ikit.org\/summerinstitute2018\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2018-12-20T16:05:33","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:05:33","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ikit.org\/summerinstitute2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"kbi\">Knowledge Building International<\/div>\n<div id=\"welcome\">\n<p>Society\u2019s need for new knowledge gives urgency to innovation and creative thinking as collective enterprises. <em>Ingenuity gap<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ingenuity-Gap-Environmental-Increasingly-Unpredictable\/dp\/037571328X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><\/em><\/a> is a term coined by Thomas Homer-Dixon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ingenuity-Gap-Environmental-Increasingly-Unpredictable\/dp\/037571328X\">2000<\/a>) to describe the challenge created by complex problems with emergent properties that evolve faster than solutions. Consider, for example, climate change, pandemics, threat of nuclear war, fake news, access to drinking water, poverty, increasing have\/have-not gaps in economic, social and educational structures and institutions. \u201c<em>Innovation-driven<\/em>\u201d is a term OECD has used to characterize organizations and societies that depend increasingly on innovation and knowledge creation to address emerging challenges (OECD, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/science-and-technology\/the-oecd-innovation-strategy_9789264083479-en#.Wq1pa79FV24\">2010<\/a>). <span>UNESCO frames the knowledge society challenge in terms reflected in the theme of KBSI2018: \u201cNobody<\/span> should be excluded from knowledge societies, where knowledge is a public good, available to each and every individual&#8221; (Cowel, <a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0014\/001418\/141843e.pdf\">2005<\/a>, p.18). Standing in the way is the rich-get-richer story of modern times\u2014a story as true for education as for the economy: those with more knowledge get more knowledge. Education\u2019s standard approaches cannot stand up to this onslaught of needs for new knowledge and new solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge Building enculturates students into a community dedicated to cultural norms that are prevalent in innovative, knowledge-creating organizations of all sorts: collective responsibility for community, not simply personal knowledge; sustained idea improvement; a \u201csurpassing ourselves\u201d mindset; and students taking charge at levels customarily reserved for teachers and curriculum designers.\u00a0In accord with Peter Drucker\u2019s <span>declaration<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=NyqDBAAAQBAJ&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;ots=BLltpkz94d&amp;dq=Drucker%2C%20P.%20(1985).%20Innovation%20and%20entrepreneurship%3A%20Practice%20and%C2%A0principles.%20New%20York%3A%20Harper%20and%20Row&amp;lr&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">1985<\/a>, p.151), innovation becomes \u201cpart and parcel of the ordinary, the norm, if not routine.\u201d We are constantly asked how Knowledge Building compares to inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, New Pedagogies for Deep Learning; integrative thinking, global competencies, design thinking\u2013whatever the educational concept of the day. Our answer: If you can do Knowledge Building you can do all the rest. That\u2019s because Knowledge Building is the <span>very means by which knowledge across all areas is advanced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We had a wonderful conference!
