Tomorrow's Innovators Sessions

We are in the process of designing the Tomorrow's Innovators sessions--the sessions that involve young students. Last year we demonstrated that it is possible to introduce grade 2-4 students, with no prior experience, to Knowledge Building pedagogy and to have grade 4-6 students use sophisticated analytic tools to analyze their progress.

In line with the emphasis on deep understanding, the focus of the 2007 Tomorrow's Innovators sessions will be: Beyond Your Theory is OK, My Theory is OK. The goal will be to demonstrate that even young students are able to develop sophisticated epistemologies regarding knowledge creation--recognizing that it is OK and in fact a good thing to have divergent theories, but theory building can't stop there. It should move ahead to theories that do a better and more complete job of explaining. An important point was elegantly stated by biologist Kenneth Miller: "Theories are not speculative hunches that may some day become 'facts' when scientists gather enough evidence for them. Theories don't become facts, theories explain facts. This means that in scientific terms, theories actually present a higher level of understanding than facts." http://www.kcfs.org/miller/analysis.html

Please join us in the following:

Design and Professional Development Sessions

In advance of the Summer Institute we will meet online in the Knowledge Society Network database to co-design the four-day sessions to be conducted at the Summer Institute. Check the IKIT Events Calendar for updates and relevant Virtual Meetings.

Analysis, Reflection, Tour (ART) Sessions

Over the four days of the Summer Institute teachers will conduct analyses of deep understanding. There will be time for discussions with students and hands-on work with Knowledge Forum and accompanying assessment tools to monitor and continually improve knowledge building practices. Please bring your Knowledge Forum databases!
