Knowledge building discourse and portfolio assessment

The study identified ways in fostering and recognizing knowledge building among Chinese learners who are studying under an examination oriented environment in Hong Kong. Efforts have been invested in exploring how knowledge building principles could be used by grade nine students in their quest of geographical knowledge as well as a means for the students to capture useful discourses in the database when preparing their knowledge building portfolios. Data sources from the Analytic Toolkit, depth of questions, and portfolio were obtained. The findings indicated that the extent to which students were engaged in Knowledge Forum was related to knowledge-building inquiry. As well, student made improvement over time on knowledge-building inquiry.
